Jake by Karina kantas A Flash Fiction Story

“So, what time are you picking him up?” Susan asked.
“Twelve thirty,” Marie answered.
“Well, we’ve got time for another cup, what do you say?
“Yeah, sure, but have you got anything stronger?” Marie felt she needed a little something to take off the edge.
“Vodka okay?”
“Great.”
Susan poured the drinks.  Marie lit up yet another cigarette, and then savoured the neat Vodka as it burned down her throat.
“You sure look nervous,” Susan said, as she sat the drinks down onto the table.
Marie smiled.  “I am a little,” she admitted. “I just don’t know what to expect.”
“It will be fine, don’t worry. Bet he’ll be glad to see you.”
“The house has been so empty and quiet without him,” Marie confessed. “I miss our nights together, curled up on the couch.  I’m so lonely,” she cried.
“I guess you miss him then?” Susan laughed. “Get a grip you weirdo,” she joked. “Not to worry he’ll soon be back in your life. Promise you’ll be around tomorrow, I’d like to say hi.”
“Yeah, sure. Listen, I’d better get going.  Don’t want to keep him waiting.”
“Don’t worry,” Susan shouted back. “It’ll be fine.”
Marie was anxious about seeing Jake again. It was okay being told that everything was all right, but she’d feel better once she saw him.
“Miss Bart,” the woman in the white coat called.
“Yes, I’m Marie Bart. How is Jake?”
“He’s fine. Just keep a close eye on him, and make sure he takes it easy. And check the dog poo for colour. If you can sign this form please.”
Marie’s hand shock as she scribbled her signature. White coat vanished. Marie stared at the door waiting.
Jake walked through the doors, afraid of what he might find. Then he saw her. Relief and excitement poured over him as he bounded over to her awaiting arms.
“OMG! Hey, boy, you missed me?” Marie asked as she stroked his glossy, red hair.
Jake replied by nudging his wet nose into the palm of her hand. His tail wagged with pleasure.
