The Curse of the Peculiar Hawk
A Horror Story
by Mark Antony Raines
Whilst investigating the death of a local hairdresser, a gracious scout called William Smith uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, peculiar hawk circulating throughout Australia. As soon as anyone uses the hawk, he or she has exactly 100 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look upside-down. A marked person feels like a magical owl to touch.
William gets hold of the hawk, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: a handsome badger balancing on a rural hairdresser, an old newspaper headline about an unfortunate accident, a hooded aardvark ranting about warts and a drinking well located in a deprived place.
When William notices his legs have owl-like properties, he realises that the curse of the peculiar hawk is true and calls in his mother, a fishmonger called Marion Russell, to help.
Marion examines the hawk and willingly submits herself to the curse. She finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. She finds the handsome badger balancing on a rural hairdresser particularly chilling. She joins the queue for a supernatural death.
William and Marion pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded aardvark. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
