UPDATE-Nasa's Dawn probe achieves orbit around Ceres

The US space agency's Dawn probe has gone into orbit around Ceres, the largest object in the Solar System between Mars and Jupiter. A signal from the satellite confirming its status was received by ground stations at 13:36 GMT. Ceres is the first of the dwarf planets to be visited by a spacecraft. Scientists hope to glean information from the object that can tell them about the Solar System's beginnings, four and a half billion years ago. Dawn has taken 7.5 years to reach its destination. Its arrival has seen it pass behind the dwarf to its "dark side". Over the next month, controllers will re-shape the orbit to get it ready to begin the prime science phase in late April. Over time, the intention is to progressively lower the orbit until the probe is just a few hundred km above the surface. By that stage, it will be returning very high resolution pictures. "We feel exhilarated," said Chris Russell, the mission's principal investigator from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). "We have much to do over the next year and a half, but we are now on station with ample reserves, and a robust plan to obtain our science objectives." WESTWARD HO FISH FESTIVAL A PROMO

Westward Ho! Fish Festival is all about celebrating and enjoying North Devon's fishing heritage, our local catch, culture and our marine environment. With a little FLAG funding and a lot of community spirit and massive support from local traders, we hope that this will be the first of many such events. We will be having children's workshops including carnival crafts, fish cookery, marine litter craft and pottery (with Tarka Pottery). There will be a mermaid storyteller, face painting and a big spring beach clean (in conjunction with Surfers Against Sewage and AONB). There will be all kinds of fishy traders cooking and selling fresh fish dishes to tempt you and a craft sale with our best local crafters showing off their products. Evening workshops include a chef demonstrations, talk about edible seaweed (with samples to try) a kite-making workshop and a fish supper on Good Friday. The festival finishes off on Easter Saturday at 3pm with a big fishy family walking carnival/parade around the village with everyone welcome to join in. The brighter the costume the better. There will be drums, shakers, whistles and bells to celebrate this first ever fish festival in the village. If you are coming on holiday, please pack some fancy dress and come and join us in the parade! Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an increase in size of the prostate gland without malignancy present and it is so common as to be normal with advancing age. It seems likely that the nature of BPH is a failure of apoptosis (natural programmed death of cells) and that some of the drugs used to treat it may induce that process.^[1]
The prostate secretes about 70% of the volume of seminal fluid. It is a hormone-dependent gland and BPH does not occur in castrated men.
It should be borne in mind that lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and BPH are not synonymous. Dutch town takes up umbrellas against rogue owl attacks

Residents in the northern Dutch town of Purmerend have been advised to take umbrellas out at night after a spate of attacks by an owl. Dozens of residents have suffered head injuries over the past three weeks at the claws of the rogue European eagle owl. Two runners were attacked on Tuesday, with one requiring stitches for five separate head wounds. The European eagle owl's usual prey are small mammals and birds. Liselotte de Bruijn, a spokeswoman for the home, told the AFP news agency that residents and workers had suffered at least 15 separate attacks by the nocturnal bird, which remains at large. Hi Mark

What inspired me - to be honest I cannot remember not being interested in animals/wildlife. It is more like who inspired me ? - four people:- Desmond Morris, Johnny Morris, Gerald Durrell and Sir David Attenborough (Zoo quests etc) and as I grew up I added Alfred Russell Wallace to that list.

I remember had a 'Why and Wonder' book of reptiles that had a picture of a gaboon viper and a gila monster on the front and to this day these are two species that makes me tingle.

As I said I am a lifelong naturalist and interested in wildlife and habitats in UK and all over world. I am now lucky enough to pursue it as a career. When I was 18 mum told me to get a proper job ! so I went to work for the Health Service then Social Service and finally Probation Service - all the time taking time off to carry out surveys. Then in 1998 it all changed I left work went back to college and the rest as they say is history.

As a professional ecologist I have worked for small companies and large multidisciplinary organisations I now work for myself I am a part time lecturer in Ecology/Survey Techniques ID etc at a local college and also carry out professional ecological services - I also carry out my own research into adders and amphibians.

My professional aim is to provide pragmatic ecological advice, my personal aims is to carry on learning about the natural world every day I learn something new (Today I found out from field researchers at Fauna and Flora International that mountain gorillas 'sing' when they are happy ! love it)

The Future: I will keep watching wildlife both in the UK and abroad, one day I would like to write a scientific paper about adders or amphibians

In 2011 we went to Uganda on a family holiday and whilst we were there in Eastern Uganda I found a frog that had never been recorded in Uganda (West African Rubber Frog Phrynomantis microps) It has only been recorded twice in East Africa my record photo etc and a written account from Ethiopia. We are hoping to return next year for further exploration of the amphibians you never know what I might find - I personally think it is an area where little or no study has taken place so it is most likely under recording of species rather than new species but !!!

Like most naturalists I would love to find a new species - and I think that is what keeps us all looking !

I am fascinated by a mystery and that is why cryptozoology interests me

A charity which provides transport to the elderly and disabled has had to shut down due to financial difficulties.
Torridge Community Transport Association issued a statement on Friday saying it was with ‘much regret’ it would cease trading.
A spokesman for the trustees said: “With increasing costs/overheads and declining revenue and funding across the transport sector, Torridge Community Transport Association’s (TCTA) financial position has been deteriorating for some months.
“The organisation has been working hard to try and find solutions to address this and have also worked in conjunction with their main customer, and funder, Devon County Council to try to resolve financial issues.
“Unfortunately cash flow has continued to deteriorate and it has now reached the point where further trading would make it be irresponsible and a breach of insolvency law.
“The trustees therefore have had to make a difficult decision and with much regret, to cease to trade with effect from 30 January 2014 and to instruct Bishop Fleming, Insolvency Practitioners, to assist with placing the company into liquidation.
“It is a sad end to an organisation that has provided a valuable and needed service in the Torridge community.”
TCTA is actively communicating with alternative service providers, to try to salvage some of its services for the community.
This time last year, the organisation took over the running of the Pannier Market Hopper in Bideford, which will now be operated by Beacon Bus.
The Ring & Ride service will continue but will be operated by Ilfracombe Community Transport Association. Passengers requiring the Ring & Ride service will need to telephone 01271 863630.
The spokesman added: “We are working hard to enable the continuation of the Voluntary Car Scheme, and will announce developments as soon as they are known.

Biologist Corsin Müller of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, and colleagues tested 11 dogs—including border collies, a fox terrier, a golden retriever, a German shepherd, and some mutts—using a touchscreen. The scientists trained the dogs to touch either a happy face or an angry face for a treat. They presented dogs with either the top half or the bottom half of the faces to ensure the animals weren't just responding to a smile or the baring of teeth. Emotions show on all parts of a human face, not just the mouth, says Müller, whose study was published February 12 in the journal Current Biology. "If you're angry, a wrinkle between the eyes shows up," he explains. The shape of the eyes can change too. World's rarest sea turtle found washed up on Devon beach

A man stumbled across one of the the world's rarest turtles on a Devon beach - and is now keeping it in his freezer. Ben Read discovered the dead Kemp's ridley sea turtle while out on a seaside walk. The critically-endangered Kemp's ridley is the rarest sea turtle in the world, with only 1,000 nesting females left. Mr Read, 28, desperately contacted a friend studying marine biology to help and was told the tiny creature is a Kemp's ridley. Concerned about how rare the turtle was, Mr Read took it back home with him and put it in his freezer while he awaits a visit from a marine biologist who will collect it for further analysis. "We ask people to keep their eyes peeled for stranded turtles during this stormy weather," he said. "Sometimes freshly stranded turtles can appear dead, but may still be alive and can be rescued. They should not be put back in the sea, as this will definitely kill them. "Instead, they should be moved away from the water to a sheltered place, preferably in a cardboard box out of draughts, and reported to experts for collection.

So he's said If you like you can go onto Yellow belt as you would of passed if you done the grading officially, but he requested that you pay for the grading to get your belt, which would of been £15 if not don't worry go for it again in 6 months, well done tho. Man born with a womb prepares for hysterectomy

A businessman is preparing to have a hysterectomy after doctors discovered he was born with a womb. The 37-year-old Lancashire man discovered he has a full set of female reproductive organs after undergoing scans for suspected bladder cancer. Now the man, who is being called Rob in order to protect his identity, has reportedly been advised by medical staff to have the organs surgically removed, even though it could trigger the menopause. Doctors believe Rob has a rare condition called persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS). This results in men developing both external male genitalia and internal female reproductive organs. ANIMAL WELFARE -STAND UP AGAINST POACHERS-Frontline teams 'unaware' of wildlife smuggler tactics

Front-line transport workers largely lack awareness on how criminal networks disguise illegal wildlife products, it emerged at a summit in Bangkok. Customs officials and wildlife trade experts say that educating freight forwarders and handlers of air, ship and land cargoes could help the fight against trafficking. Their recent meeting with transport operators was the first of its kind. "There was a genuine shock (among participants from the transport industry in the meeting) as to the magnitude of wildlife trade and the methods of disguise used by traffickers to transport these commodities," said Martin Palmer, an expert in global trade compliance requirements and international transport. "For example, when a rhino horn is ground down to powder, it's almost impossible to identify the difference between a box of grey chalk and a box of rhino horn powder, from a visual check. "Facts like these came as a big surprise to participants from the transport industry." Wildlife organisations say around 35,000 elephants are killed for their tusks every year, mainly in Africa. The South African government has said poaching of its rhinos reached a record of 1,215 last year. Only around 3,000 tigers are now left across the globe, which is only 5% of what the population was a century ago. Experts say despite international efforts against wildlife trafficking, criminal networks have been adopting new tactics in transporting the illegal goods - which are estimated to be worth up to $23bn annually, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. Be cautious of the level 4 spirits who contact & chat; they may be wanting your sensitivity as a possession of their own – thinking they feel the existence of physical life again; not accepting of their own death or having to examine & see their own physical life before them as they relive the misery, hurt and pain they caused from selfish acts of greed or jealousy against another. 

Ask questions directly; speak to those of the light who seek their guides to find their way; those who want to evolve & move on to another higher plane of existence – they have achieved their purpose of remaining earthbound but have lost their way or they have lost contact with their spirit guide & now reside in the darkness.

MY PAST IS NOT MY PRESENT?

Yes it was wrong for me to commit a crime -criminal damage in 1986 -Essex only excuse i have is i just split from my first, girlfriend ,only two woman in my life i know married to my second since 1991.I went to court twice got fines and a years probation which sometimes i did not attend as went weight training down the gym  instead yes did get in trouble.Since then i have been a normal life apart from a small dispute in Bideford about litter in garden -got warning letter.I  have been a volunteer for -meals on wheels,furniture store,helping people through befriending ,worked with special needs,challenging behavior,learning problems,sex offenders, mental health and i believe my past has not been a problem as i will tell or put in writing if requested about my past,i hope this does not affect and volunteer work i do now or in the future .

Wednesday -was in full paranoid mode -ie moving,thinking being judged.Went from being calm to losing the plot within 10 seconds managed to hit the wall with  my fist ending it swelling up and hurting.I then went into my bedroom and just broke down and cried and was anti social ie not wishing to talk and shutting off wife.Next day was flat due to energy drain from day before ,going to quake on monday to start to sort myself out most of the time i am able to be calm but this part of me scares me and anyone that sees it ,so that hope thier is no more behaviour like this,mark

In 1987 I remember watching a martial arts film one night when I was just 9 years old, and I said to my mum & dad, I want to do that! So I went along to the Barnstaple Leisure centre and joined up with Mr. Peter Hill learning Wado Ryu karate, I managed to get my 'Yellow belt' in 1988.
When I turned 11 years old I trained in a Kung Fu style called Lau Gar with Mr. Chef Prince. I studied with him for 3 years.
In 1996 I started Freestyle Tae Kwon Do gaining my Black Belt in 2001.

In May 2001 I then started training with Andy Coles in what became Earth Ocean Martial Arts and have been their ever since.

I've also completed a Basic body guard course, held a SIA licence in security, I am First Aid trained, and have an up to date CRB enhanced disclosure certificate (DBS).

April 2013, I was certified by Mr.Andy Coles to be an instructor of Earth Ocean Martial Arts.

This Year 2011 I have now incorporated Shan Xi style Xing Yi Quan, the qualities of this style is based on efficiency and economy of movements, it has a direct fighting concept utilising simultaneous attacks and defences

I’m always looking to improve and develop the style as my knowledge of the martial arts grows!

The main concept of this style is based on the theory of Yin & Yang; the techniques can be soft and fluid as well as dynamic and powerful.

Children's classes are from ages 7 to 11.

These classes incorporate more traditional concepts of learning, developing and using:
Concentration, Self-control, Self-discipline, Courtesy & Respect.

They are especially suited for children to focus their minds, get fit and learn practical skills to protect themselves from difficult situations in a fun and safe environment.

I have set in place rules for the children to follow as well as those listed above, which they must follow not only in training, but in everyday life.

Every 10 lessons junior students can go for a martial arts merit badge, this gives the student a challenge to work towards! And it helps improve their skills in the mastery of the martial arts.


Adult's classes are from ages 12 upwards.

These classes are ideally suited to those who wish to learn and understand the true meaning of the martial arts, improving health, getting fit/fitter and learning to protect themselves.

SWAN HITS POWERLINE

This picture is of a swan which became blood red after  hitting a power line also its beak was badly cut.The swan was rescued  by T revor Weeks at Wartling,East Sussex and had to swim an icy lake to save the bird.The swan is now recovering and been bandaged.
