Do bees have regional accents? Cardiff University launches scheme to find out

British summer garden is not complete without the gentle sound of bees, buzzing among the flowers.

But up and down the country the insects may be humming a different tune. Scientists at the University of Cardiff are keen to discover if beeshave accents, buzzing at a higher or lower pitch depending on their location.

The buzz associated with bees is produced by the fast vibration of wings, and is most commonly heard when the insects are in mid-flight. They tend to say silent while foraging in plants for pollen and nectar.

But bees also make a catalogue of other noises depending on what is happening in the hive. When under attack , or if interrupted during foraging, they buzz more aggressively. They also make a piping sound when they are getting ready to swarm.

Bees have also been known to rub their back legs together to call missing insects back to the hive, and scientists now think they emit a low hum during "waggle dancing" – a figure of eight movement made on the wall of the hive which shows other members of the colony where the best flowers are growing.

Now researchers are inviting beekeepers to place recorders on their hives to pick up the sounds of the bees so they can pick up regional variations.read more

Rare snakes that 'disappeared' for seven years have returned with a baby in tow. Conservation volunteers have been searching for signs of the smooth snakes - the UK's rarest reptiles - since ten were released in 2009 and a further seven in 2010 at a secret location on a Devon RSPBnature reserve.They have recorded some sightings but none that proved that the snakes were breeding - until now.

Delighted volunteers have found, recorded and photographed a newborn smooth snake and named him Cyril. He was spotted with two adult snakes and is officially the first smooth snake to be born at the re-introduction site in Devon.

Nick Moulton, of the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust, one of the partners in the re-introduction project, said: "It really is a difficult species to work with so for the volunteers to stick with it and find that proof of breeding is brilliant. It is now re-established in Devon, this really is a big find."

The re-introduction was a partnership between the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust, Clinton Devon Estates, and the RSPB, supported by English Nature.Populations of the re-introduced snakes are largely restricted to a few heaths in Dorset, Hampshire and Surrey.Smooth snakes are extraordinarily difficult to find – it can take ten years of work simply to prove the species is present or absent from a particular place.

They are non-venomous and can grow to around 50-60cm in length and 90-150g in weigh with an average lifespan of up to 30 years

Snakes recorded at the re-introduction site have been given names beginning with C: Cedric was recorded in 2010 and 2011, Celia in 2011.But volunteers could not be sure that the pair were born in Devon as some of the re-introduced females may have been pregnant at the time of re-introduction.

They have been watching for the snakes since the first were re-introduced, visiting the site at least once a fortnight, from March to October.

An RSPB spokesman said "Now we have got evidence proving breeding and there is a chance there may be others, so we are over the moon.

new cages were built over the weekend to catch missing lynx-flaviu after the crafty cat sneaked into 2 cages and managed to run off with the bait.benjamin mee - owner of dartmoor zoo =we are putting our hopes on a larger trap we have built.2 keepers were asked to go in new cage to find way out but could,t=.zoo keepers from the zoo are going to play recordings of flaviu mother to lure the 2 year old big cat out of hiding .so far 35 staff ,police with helicopters ,scent dogs,25 traps have failed to capture flaviu.the recording of mothers call will be played all night at dartmoor zoo and some of mothers straw bedding has been shipped from  port lympne,kent where flaviu came from. a petition has been started on change.org calling for dartmoor zoo owner benjamin mee to return this  carpathian lynx to its previuos home at port lympe zoo ,kent .sam srofts person behind pertition =thinks it is wrong to use the mothrs call or bedding to get the 2 year flaviu to return to zoo and also either get both cats-mother-to at dartmoor zoo ar back to port lympe zoo ,kent .in other news ben me is still conerdent on capturing the lynx as search area is same and food has been taked from key sites and experts will saty in area now missing 1 1days at this posting.the sun -national paper asked one its reporters to dress up as a lynx and use lynx deodorant called dark temptation to lure missing carpathian lynx flaviu .this is due to keepers are worried that lynxes become sexually active due to mating season and their have used growling sounds or calls to atrart males in wild.in another related article zoo keepers from dartmoor zoo are using tiger and lion poo to encourge this big cat back to zoo. the scent will hopefully dissuade the lynx from going further away and to keep him close as possible to capture him but may not happen due to government need to give permission first due to poo may spread disease.

one day the mad hatter decided it was time to get out into the big bad world so he became part of the glad gardens in sealand.their he met fellow people -solar,kite,giant,ookc ,flower,captian ,white rabbit..white rabbit gave mad hatter a ride to the glad garden on thors day an through time chatted ,laughed so the hatter thought he had made a friend .but this my dear one loyal reader events turned changed ,the  white rabbit became distant ,cold like ,even starting to influence others and then came a killer blow when a message to the mad hatter that was relayed that made him feel very bad about himself so he fell on his sword and left .the mad hatter will miss the glad gardens but not wanting to be his old self
