Living with Mammals
Wherever we live in the UK, we share the green spaces
around our homes and places of work with wild species. By carefully
identifying and counting the mammals that live in and around built up
land, we can begin to understand – and encourage – the biodiversity on
our doorstep.
Keeping track of wildlife in surveys such as Living with Mammals is essential – not only to improving the lot of our wild neighbours, but to improving our own as well.Take a look at what you helped us find out in our Living with Mammals update 2015.
All you have to do is spend some time observing a chosen site, such as your garden or allotment or local churchyard or park, noting any mammals you see or the signs they leave behind. Your ‘urban’ site must be within 200 metres of a building. Jot down your sightings for eight or more weeks in the survey period (they needn’t be all together) and tell us what you see.read more
The Heritage Handbook. An A-Z guide to the Archaeology and Landscape History of Northern Devon.
Northern Devon is famed for its natural beauty, which is generally
clear for all to see and celebrated for its history, which is often far less evident to the casual observer. This book sets out to explain what is known about the archaeology and landscape history of the area so that the reader will have a better appreciation of Northern Devon’s
long and colourful history, from the earliest evidence of human
occupation on the beach at Westward Ho! to the relics of World War
Two training on Braunton Burrows.
The handbook has mostly been written by John Bradbeer and Terry Green, with support and advice from other experts for North Devon and beyond. Nearly 200 pages in length and fully illustrated, it is
available for pre-order at a price of £10 for members of the society and £12.50 for non-members.

THE CURTAIN comes down on more than 50 years of wrestling events at the
Fairfield Halls, Croydon, on Sunday 10 April before the venue closes for
a two year £30 million refurbishment. All Star aim to finish on a high
note when an afternoon event is set to reflect some of the big moments
down the years. The action in the up-close-and-personal atmosphere of
the Arnhem Gallery begins at 3pm and several leading campaigners have
been invited to name their dream bout for the occasion, among them James
Mason, the south London-born heavyweight who has made more appearances
than any other wrestler since All Star first hit the Fairfield in the
1980s with all the top stars of the day including ‘Rollerball’ Mark
Rocco, Johnny Saint, Dave Finlay and Wayne Bridges on view in the
opening presentation. Then, during 2012, the Fairfield’s 50th
anniversary was marked by ‘Legends of the Ring’ event watched by another
huge crowd. Mason, who first stepped into the Croydon arena as a 15
year-old has said he would like to face someone still active from the
‘World of Sport’ era and All Star have asked fans for nominations with
Danny Collins, Mal Sanders and Johnny Kidd among the front-runners.
Others ready for a special challenge include Wirral-based fans’
favourite Dean Allmark and the explosive UK Hooligans tag formation
consisting of Norfolk-based brothers Roy and Zack Knight, sons of former
Ricky Knight whose ‘Superflys’ tag formation with Jimmy Ocean were
Croydon regulars for many years and revived their partnership to take on
‘Liverpool Lads’ Robbie Brookside and Frankie Sloane in the 2012
Croydon ‘Legends’ event. Top 21st century action on 10 April will also
include Welsh tank Caden Lay, Finnish ‘Nasty Boy’ Vitto Puro and Hakeem
Wakur, the fast moving man they call the ‘Arabian Sandstorm,’ showing
their paces There will also be a welcome return for one of Britain’s
very best heavyweight campaigners, Kent-based former TNA X-Division
title holder Doug Williams who faces masked Mexican Lucha Libre star
Black Tiger who has been very impressive since making a UK debut during
February. Ringside seats in the first two rows can be reserved in
advance and are are on sale at the Fairfield Halls box office, telephone
0208-688-9291. A special £45 family offer covering two adults and two
children under 16 is available and further event information will appear
