Finalists named for $10m Star Trek 'tricorder' X Prize

Ten finalists have been chosen in a $10m (£6m) competition to develop a real-life "tricorder" - the medical scanner used in the Star Trek series.

The Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize, launched last year, challenges anyone to develop a wireless device capable of detecting a range of diseases.
The technology employs sensors and imaging to measure vital signs and diagnose conditions non-invasively.
X Prize officials said the technology was now "fact, not science fiction".
The 10 finalists come from a range of backgrounds, including universities, medical device manufacturers and tech start-ups.
One research team is backed by Nasa and the Bill Gates Foundation, while another is made up of engineering students at Johns Hopkins University in the US.
They now have until the middle of next year to develop workable prototypes of their devices in the hope of winning the prize.

WHAT IN A MIDDLE NAME?

I  have always wondered why people are given middle names.Is it to past a family name or part of a long forgotten tradition,for years i hated my middle name would not even use it.Why?well due to when at primary school i was asked to play a well known roman-MARK ANTONY,I ran away due to fact had to kiss a girl,yuck,yes it is sad,thats why i did not use for ages.

RED SQUIRRELS BORN IN CORNWALL.

Two  kits-baby squirrels were born at TREWITHEN GARDENS ,CORNWALL.In 2012 2 female and 1 male  were introduced  as part of CORNWALL RED SQUIRREL PROJECT.As you know RED Squirrels have to compete with greys for food/habitat and at risk of fatal disease -squirrel pox.

North Devon Firefly Faery Fayre & Ball was inspired by the need for something new and exciting to happen in North Devon. Other parts of the Westcountry and other parts of the British Isles have well established Faery Festivals and Balls but until July 2014 here was nothing of an Otherworldly nature in North Devon at all except perhaps the Weird Weekend which has taken place in North Devon now. NORTH Devon Firefly Faery Fayre & Ball is North Devon's first ever celebration of faery arts, crafts and music. The aim of the event in addition to celebrating faery culture is to provide an annual fundraising event for our local secondary school The Small School In Hartland which has a maximum intake of 40 pupils and provides excellent individual tuition and encourages the creative arts .We want to build on the success of the first faery fayre & ball held in Hartland in 2014 which was loved very much by all those who attended and supported the event and with the second event being held at a larger venue, Clovelly village hall on July 18th 2015.This will feature at least 20 stall holders,entertainment for adults and children at the fayre including faery workshops and live music floowed by 4 or 5 live bands in the evening at the faery ball.We are hoping that the event will grow larger from one year to the next and may eventually transform into a faery festival if there is enough support. hope this is okay for you from Babz and Gruffy (organisers of North Devon Firefly Faery Fayre & Ball ). https://www.facebook.com/pages/North-Devon-Firefly-Faery-Fayre-Ball-Saturday-18th-July-2015/789367564441265?fref=ts
