Loud benchSWNS
Residents have complained that they are being kept awake all night - by a talking bench
The seat is equipped with a three-minute recorded message and teaches people history about the local area when they sit on it.
But families nearby claim they’re kept up all night by the messages which are billowed through loud speakers.
One resident, who lives in a neighbouring block of flats, told how it’s mostly a problem when people make use of the talking bench in the early hours. -read more

Macho' switch in the brain that makes men aggressive and more competitive is pinpointed for the first time

The 'macho' switch in the brain which makes men aggressive has been discovered by scientists.
And the brain circuit could explain how some animals are able to become alpha males and exert control over others, the study found.
Researchers found stimulating the switch significantly boosted a mouse's chance of winning aggressive encounters and moving up the social hierarchy.
The discovery could lead to brain training to boost the performance of athletes, said the researchers.
It also offers hope of developing drug targets for pathological aggression - which is a component in Alzheimer’s, autism, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Feng shui

Feng shui or fengshui (pinyinfēngshuǐpronounced [fə́ŋ.ʂwèi]) is a Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing everyone with the surrounding environment. It is closely linked to Taoism. The term feng shui literally translates as "wind-water" in English. This is a cultural shorthand taken from the passage of the now-lost Classic of Burial recorded in Guo Pu's commentary:[1] Feng shui is one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics, classified as physiognomy (observation of appearances through formulas and calculations). The feng shui practice discusses architecture in metaphoric terms of "invisible forces" that bind the universe, earth, and humanity together, known as qi.
Historically, feng shui was widely used to orient buildings—often spiritually significant structures such as tombs, but also dwellings and other structures—in an auspicious manner. Depending on the particular style of feng shui being used, an auspicious site could be determined by reference to local features such as bodies of water, stars, or a compass.
Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water.[1]
Feng shui was suppressed in mainland China during the state-imposed Cultural Revolution of the 1960s but has since then regained popularity. Some critics have called feng shui a baseless superstition, stating there is no demonstrable evidence supporting its principles.-wiki link

How studying bats' flight technique could lead to drone development

Long-eared bats are assisted in flight by their ears and body, according to a study by researchers at Lund University in Sweden. The recent findings improve researchers’ understanding of the bats’ flying technique and could be significant for the future development of drones, among other things.Contrary to what researchers have previously thought, Christoffer Johansson Westheim and his colleagues at Lund University show that long-eared bats are helped in flight by their large ears.
“We show how the air behind the body of a long-eared bat accelerates downwards, which means that the body and ears provide lift. This distinguishes the long-eared bats from other species that have been studied and indicates that the large ears do not merely create strong resistance, but also assist the animal in staying aloft”, says Christoffer Johansson Westheim-read more and see video

URBAN BIGFOOT INTERVIEW

Thank you for asking! I was inspired when I was about 8 years old. I heard the stories around me that Bigfoot was in our woods at night. I started building a shack in the woods on my own at age 12. I listened and observed alot. Almost daily. I moved away and here in Mid Missouri I had heard of 2 sightings in my area within 30 miles of my home. I started hiking more and looking for tree damage, formations and nests. My goal is too capture a clear image of an interaction with the female I have seen from about 100 feet away. I had believed it was a male but due to the time of day, I changed that description to female. I firmly believe that after watching Missing 411 and comparing my own notes that the Bigfoot communities are underground. There is no other explanation that makes sense other than what I have been told as a child and facts that I have now. There has never been a sighting of a sleeping Bigfoot. No one has ever photographed evidence that they live above ground. My book Urban Bigfoot is based on this theory. As far as where I am going with it, I am unsure. New field research and conferences are planned for most of the next year. I wrote a simple children's book, The Bigfoot Farm to get children interested in our love for Bigfoot.

PETER CAREY INTERVIEW

My inspiration comes from many attributes. The 'scene' being just one of them. You see people going through their journeys and how modification is constantly evolving. Seeing people get body modification is inspirational in itself because you see how happy they are as a result and with the changes that take place with new and existing mods, you can't resist getting something new. My aims.. I'm proud to be modified and I'll happily continue with it as I find it very satisfying. I want to become a modification artist in the future. As a body piercer, I enjoy meeting people and being a part of the journey they take with the piercing. It's not just a piece of metal going into flesh; it's a trust bond and a personal moment shared between two people. I want to be a part of the modification journey that people take also. For the future I want to reach 101 piercings (I have over 80 at the moment) and more modifications. These include but not limited to magnetic implants under all finger tips, silicone implants under my hands, one of which is likely to be a north star styled implant (it flashes when activated by a magnetic implant) and more scarification. From there, I'll see where my journey takes me.

BANK CLOSURE -ARRRH.

We had a letter in the post from our local branch of BARCLAYS BANK,HOLSWORTHY  to state it was shutting down this branch in October 2017 .I know some may think not a problem but it starts to breed fear that others will follow .The move is blamed on online banking and not enough people using the bank .If you are  like me mistrust online banking due to rise of cyber crime and prefer to not travel miles to go to bank you may use the post office to pay money into most bank accounts.

The Short Snouted Seahorse – scientific name Hippocampus Hippocampus – was found by experts off the coast of Devon.

A grave mistake about Dick Turpin! Historian who has written a book on the highwayman claims it is unlikely his body is under his headstone

The headstone of ‘John Palmer otherwise Richard Turpin the notorious highwayman and horse stealer’ who was ‘executed’ on 7th April 1739 is a fakeEven for a city steeped in history, the colourful story of Dick Turpin’s death and burial in York is a genuine highlight.
But the thousands of tourists who have visited the highwayman’s last resting place and taken photos of his inscribed gravestone, were doing so under false pretences it has been claimed.
For new research by the country’s leading expert, Professor James Sharpe, has concluded that the headstone of ‘John Palmer otherwise Richard Turpin the notorious highwayman and horse stealer’ who was ‘executed’ on 7th April 1739 is a fake.

Why frogs thrived after the dinosaurs were wiped out

Frogs around the world should be grateful for the forces that wiped out dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
That's according to new research from scientists in the United States and China that suggests whatever caused the mass extinction paved the way for the proliferation of frogs.
While frogs have been around for more than 200 million years, new research suggests that three main modern frog lineages — about 88 per cent of the living species of frogs — began to thrive shortly after the extinction event that signalled the end of all non-avian dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous Period.
While we know that about 80 per cent of the world's species were killed off in the mass extinction, what's not known is whether that extended to frogs, as there are few fossilized remains that have been found.
However, the researchers of this new study say that whether or not many frog species became extinct, the event gave rise to the frogs we know today.
"Maybe there was some extinction that happened there," says David Blackburn, co-author of the paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
"At the very least, what happened afterwards was that it seems like there must have been rapid diversification, where we had many new lineages evolve," said Blackburn, who is also associate curator of amphibians and reptiles at the Florida Museum of Natural History.-read more
