Plan to re-establish royal favourite fish in the River Severn

A shad caught from the riverSince the installation of weirs in the river in the 19th century many fish species, including the Shad, have been unable to swim upriver to their ancient spawning grounds. But the new scheme will see the installation of special fish passes at the weirs in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire so the fish can once again make the journey unhindered. Twaite Shad and Allis Shad are said to have been favoured in the court of Henry III in the 13th Century, and were once abundant and famed across Europe for their taste and quality.read more

CAT IS MAN'S BEST FRIEND Street Cat Named Bob

NINTCHDBPICT000019083434James Bowen says he'd be dead if it wasn't for kitty companionship that gave him a sense of purpose while he was homeless.IT used to be a dog’s life for stray cat Bob. Unloved and unwanted, he slept in cold doorways while nursing an injured leg.
But today he is a furry film star who flies first-class, has his own “Bobbyguards” at public events and his favourite Dairylea Dunkers on tap.The famous ginger tom is the star of A Street Cat Named Bob, directed by Canadian Roger Spottiswoode, which is in cinemas on November 4.
The film is based on the bestselling book of the same title, which has shifted six million copies and tells the story of how Bob’s companionship helped homeless busker James Bowen to win his battle with drug addiction.
Originally, the London puss wasn’t supposed to play himself in the film. The producers had ten specially trained doubles flown over from Canada, but they proved scaredy cats when it came to filming in London at night, so Bob stepped in.read more

New era of climate change reality' as emissions hit symbolic threshold

The WMO predicts carbon dioxide concentrations will stay above the symbolic 400ppm for the whole of 2016 and reach new highs. The world is in a new era of “climate change reality”, with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reaching a symbolic threshold which it will not fall below for many generations, scientists have said.
In 2015, for the first time, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere were at 400 parts per million (ppm) on average across the year as a whole, the World Meteorological Organisation’s (WMO) annual greenhouse gas bulletin reveals.
The longest established greenhouse gas monitoring station in the world, at Mauna Loa in Hawaii, predicts carbon dioxide concentrations will stay above the symbolic 400ppm for the whole of 2016 and reach new highs.
It will not dip below the 400ppm mark again for many generations, the experts said.
The growth spurt in carbon dioxide levels, which saw a bigger-than-average increase in the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere between 2014 and 2015, was fuelled by the El Niño weather phenomenon in the Pacific.-read more

What Is Qi? (and Other Concepts)

After 2,500 years of evolution, TCM has become a very rich and sophisticated system of rational medicine with a great diversity of theories and applications. But, in its essence, itseeks to understand and facilitate harmony in human life.
It is based on a very simple principle: any system that is in harmony tends towards health, wellbeing, and sustainability. A system that is in disharmony tends towards illness, disease, suffering, and collapse.

What is a system in TCM?

A system is comprised of everything that creates and sustains it. Everything is interconnected and interdependent. If all of the parts of a system are in harmony with one another, then the whole system is in harmony. Disturb one thing and you create a disturbance that ripples through the whole system.
This principle applies to any and all systems. For example, it applies as equally to a human being as it does to a family, community, or the environment. So we must take care to consider our actions and to take things as a whole.

What are the fundamental concepts?

Two concepts that are unique and fundamental to Chinese medicine are Qi (usually translated as "vital energy") and yin and yang (the harmony of all the opposite elements and forces that make up existence). These two concepts form what we might call the "roots" of Chinese medicine.

Springing from these roots are the basic principles and theories about the dynamics of Qi and yin and yang, which form the "stems" of Chinese medicine. -read more

Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of All HallowsEvening),[5] also known as Allhalloween,[6] All Hallows' Eve,[7] or All Saints' Eve,[8] is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide,[9] the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.[10][11]
It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from Celtic harvest festivals which may have pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, and that this festival was Christianized as Halloween.[1][7][12][13][14][15] Some academics, however, support the view that Halloween began independently as a solely Christian holiday.[1][16][17][18][19]
Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising), attending Halloween costume parties, decorating, carvingpumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfiresapple bobbing and divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories and watching horror films. In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular,[20][21][22] although elsewhere it is a more commercial and secular celebration.[23][24][25] Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows' Eve,[26][27] a tradition reflected in the eating of certain foods on this vigil day, including applespotato pancakes and soul cakes.[27][28][29]-wiki link

how to keep pets safe during fireworks

Fireworks

Many animals find fireworks scary. It is estimated that 45 per cent of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks.

It doesn’t have to be that way though, so don’t ignore the problem. Firework phobia is a treatable condition and animals don’t have to suffer such misery every year. Seek advice from your vet who will, if necessary, be able to refer you to a professional clinical animal behaviourist.

There are also lots of simple things you can do to help your pet deal with fireworks. By preparing in advance before fireworks start your pet will be better able to cope with the noises.

Two-month winter closure for town market a possibility-holsworthy news -Zoe Uglow Reporter (Holsworthy Post)

THE town council wants to make it clear they will not be closing Holsworthy’s weekly market indefinitely, but is considering closure during January and February as poor weather conditions in the past have reduced turnout and profits.
The town council met for a full town council meeting on Wednesday, October 4, to discuss the possibility of closing the market during two months only. In previous years it has heard many complaints from traders about the poor weather conditions at the start of the year drastically affecting trade. The council has decided it is time to look into possible measures to ease loses and ensure the Wednesday market can survive into the future — however some traders have expressed their opposition to proposals for a two month closure.
Mayor Jon Hutchings reiterated the point that the council is not planning to close the market for good, he said: “I want to assure locals and traders that we are not closing the market. No decision will be made tonight but we will take any suggestions to a market committee and then back to a full council meeting again.”
Speaking on the issues that have been raised to him by market traders and stall holders, Cllr Hutchings said: “We have had issues with the wind in the past, with traders saying the market in the weeks between Christmas and new year and the one after have been terrible and a waste of time.
“We have had complaints that the tents have been flapping and blowing around in the heavy winds and that this has become quite dangerous. However, now that we have said we will close it they are moaning.”
Holsworthy town clerk Vanessa Saunders, who is also the council’s responsible financial officer, said: “We do make a loss. Because of the bad weather last year they did miss a few weeks of the market anyway.”
Ms Saunders suggested that if they did close the market during January and February it would ‘give us time to clean up’ as many of the complaints the council have received regard the dirty or poor state of the markets tents and signage.-      Good morning Mark,

Mankind would have gone extinct if the fictional scientist had also created a female monster

If Victor Frankenstein had also created a bride, mankind would have been fictionally wiped out by the competition from the pair within 4,000 years. Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester starred in the Universal picture, the Bride of Frankenstein in 1935If Victor Frankenstein had created a bride for his monster, mankind would have been wiped out within 4,000 years, a new research paper concludes.
Dartmouth University scientists studied Mary Shelley's 1818 Gothic masterpiece and concluded that it could have had a much more horrific ending.
If the fictional scientist had acquiesced to his creation's pleas and created it a bride,  mankind would have been 'wiped out' by the competition from the pair, the scientists say following the 'thought experiment'.

Dish to listen for ET around strange star

Green Bank TelescopeA $100m initiative to listen for signals from alien life is targeting a star with an unusual dimming pattern.
The Breakthrough Listen project, backed by Prof Stephen Hawking, will train a US radio telescope on a target called Tabby's Star.
Tabby's Star has been a subject of attention and controversy over its irregular dimming pattern.
Some scientists have been puzzled by large dips in the star's brightness.
One of the most favoured explanations for this behaviour is that a swarm of comet fragments is periodically blocking light from the star, which also known by its official designation - KIC 8462852.
One very remote and speculative idea - yet one that has attracted much attention in the media - is that the pattern is caused by some kind of artificial structure, or a collection of structures, around the star.
The co-director of the Breakthrough Listen programme, Dr Andrew Siemion, said he was sceptical of explanations that involved intelligent life.
He added: "The Breakthrough Listen programme has the most powerful SETI -read more

Adam Curtis’ new film HyperNormalisation

HyperNormalisation tells the extraordinary story of how we got to this strange time of great uncertainty and confusion - where those who are supposed to be in power are paralysed - and have no idea what to do. And, where events keep happening that seem inexplicable and out of control - from Donald Trump to Brexit, the War in Syria, the endless migrant crisis, and random bomb attacks. It explains not only why these chaotic events are happening - but also why we, and our politicians, cannot understand them.
The film shows that what has happened is that all of us in the West - not just the politicians and the journalists and the experts, but we ourselves - have retreated into a simplified, and often completely fake version of the world. But because it is all around us, we accept it as normal.
HyperNormalisation has been made specifically for BBC iPlayer. It tells an epic narrative spanning 40 years, with an extraordinary cast of characters. They include the Assad dynasty, Donald Trump, Henry Kissinger, Patti Smith, the early performance artists in New York, President Putin, intelligent machines, Japanese gangsters, suicide bombers - and the extraordinary untold story of the rise, fall, rise again, and finally the assassination of Colonel Gaddafi.
All these stories are woven together to show how today’s fake and hollow world was created. Part of it was done by those in power - politicians, financiers and technological utopians. Rather than face up to the real complexities of the world, they retreated. And instead constructed a simpler version of the world in order to hang onto power.
But it wasn’t just those in power. The film shows how this strange world was built by all of us. We all went along with it because the simplicity was reassuring. And that included the left and the radicals who thought they were attacking the system. The film reveals how they too retreated into this make-believe world - which is why their opposition today has no effect, and nothing ever changes.-read more

Perigee and Apogee

The Moon's orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle, but elliptical, with one side closer to the Earth than the other.
The point on the Moon's orbit closest to the Earth, is called the perigee and the point farthest away is theapogee.

238,000 Miles on Average

This means that the distance between the Moon and Earth varies throughout the month and the year. On average the distance is about 238,000 miles or 382,900 kilometers.

Super Full Moon and Super New Moon

According to NASA, a Super Full Moon looks around 12 to 14% bigger than a Micromoon.
When a full Moon coincides with being closest to Earth, it is called a Super Full Moon. A new Moon that takes places when the Moon is at its perigee is known as a Super New Moon.
Micromoon, on the other hand, is when a full or a new Moon is farthest from the Earth (apogee). It's also sometimes known as a Minimoon, Mini Full Moon or a Mini New Moon.-read more

Anglers put on alert over killer carp disease

Anglers and fishery owners are being warned to be on their guard following outbreaks of the Koi Herpes Virus - a killer carp disease for which there is no known cure.
The outbreak could lead fishery owners to introduce stricter controls over the use of landing nets and keepnets, with anglers having to use only dry nets or nets which have been disinfected for 15 minutes or more and then thoroughtly rinsed. Alternatively, some fisheries may insist that anglers use only the fishery's own nets.
There have been confirmed cases of KHV in the South and South East and reportedly suspected cases in the Midlands. At its worse KHV is 100 per cent fatal to koi and other species of carp.
Whilst the Environment Agency are controlling fish movements from known KHV sites, it has come under attack from some fishery owners because it is not prepared to say which fisheries have been affected.
The Environment Agency says this is to protect the long-term reputation and livelihood of the affected waters, whilst a growing band of fishery owners say the EA should release the details as anglers travel many miles to go fishing and the information could help to protect unaffected venues.
The Professional Coarse Fisheries Association, the UK's leading professional body for fishery owners, is contacting all its members and issuing them with advice and information on how best to combat and curtail the outbreak.
Disinfectant in net dips need to be kept fresh and it is advised that anglers and fishery owners immerse nets for a minimum of 15 minutes. Alternatively, some fisheries may insist that anglers use only nets supplied by the fishery itself.
As with all viruses and bacteria and most parasites, the KHV virus cannot survive on a dry host.
Koi herpes Virus, is a viral disease highly contagious to fish which may cause significant fish kills in koi and common carp. Historically, the first outbreak of KHV was reported in 1998 and confirmed in 1999 in Israel, where there is a highly successful international trade in breeding and rearing carp both for the table and for fisheries. Since then, other cases have been confirmed in the United States, Europe and Asia. In England there have been about 17 outbreaks in the last five years, an average of about three a year.-read more

She had her dog and I had mine and we put the dogs in the boot of the car ready for a walk. Helen my sister was the driver I was the passenger. We wanted to go somewhere different with the dogs but it was getting very dark so we decided to drive local but somewhere different. We went through countryside roads and back lanes and came across a street which only allows one car to go down at a time with a few pull ins on the way down. As we got near the moon light lit up the road so it was still visible to see to walk the.dogs. Out from the left a man came out with three dogs. He was shining his.tourch and let us drive past him. As we got further up the road. Something else came from the left. It was strange looking very tall. Slight hunch shoulders and looked like when it walked it was either dragging something or its leg was injured. My sister stopped the car in an emergency break and we both said what the fuck is that? It then continued to cross the road and stopped in the middle when my sister pressed her horn on the car. It stopped looked at us from a distance and I told my sister to put the main beam on. We was trying so hard to focus on this creature. Its reflective eyes was glowing at us with the main beam on. I pressed the horn several time to get its attention. Its eyes was like 2 big ones and 4 small ones. Really couldn't understand what we was looking at. My sister was flashing her beam then it started to walk straight across the road into woods at the right. We couldn't turn the car round we had to go past it. I was scared I pressed the central locking system of the car. I quickly when onto the Internet to tell people what we saw to.skeptics sayings red deers stand on two feet. This was no red deer. We searched the area for anything we came across black annis or griffiydam which isn't far. We Google where we was and the road is called limby Hall lane Swannington which is near griffiydam. All which are legends of Leicestershire. We asked people came across this site and told what we saw. I told people got a group we stood in those woods at night two weeks ago with a medium who says there is a portal near by or witch craft or someone did worship the devil. I believe myself it's not a ghost how can two people seem it and also reflective eyes. They were Redish orangish in colour. Glowing in and out like cats eyes. We keep driving down with fail. We used paranormal equipment people said they saw something run fast through the woods but I didn't see that. All the time twigs snapping all around us in the woods when we had the sp11 in there. We still don't know what it was we didn't get any features just outline and glowing eyes. This thing was at least 7ft tall.

Bigfoot interest getting bigger

Paranormal investigator Thomas Curtin (left) buys a “Bluff Creek” keychain from Jordan Lowe during Sunday’s Bigfoot Day at Beaver Creek State Park. Lowe, the proprietor of Asylum Comics in Marietta, Ohio, has written a comic book on the life of a young Bigfoot. (Photo by Stephen Huba)EAST LIVERPOOL–Sightings of Bigfoot aficionados spiked over the weekend at Beaver Creek State Park, which hosted its second annual Bigfoot Day on Sunday.
Among them were investigators of paranormal phenomena, specialists in cryptozoology, and experts in UFOs. And then there were the everyday fans, like the man whose T-shirt read, “Bigfoot saw me but nobody believes him.”
The fact that there is such a thing as Bigfoot Day is a sign that, along with the sightings, there is an increase in public interest in cryptozoology (the study of unknown animals), parapsychology (the study of ghosts and spirits) and ufology (the study of UFOs), said Thomas Curtin, a paranormal investigator and researcher from Warren, Ohio.
“I think there’s been an increase in interest. A lot of people don’t realize how many sightings there are in Ohio,” he said, noting that Ohio is fourth or fifth in the country for numbers of Bigfoot sightings.
Curtin heads Eerie Ohio, an organization that investigates and documents claims of the paranormal in Mahoning, Portage and Trumbull counties. “I do it strictly for the passion of it and to help people,” he said.read more

Schiaparelli: Mars probe 'crash site identified'

MRO imageThe gouge in the ground likely made by Europe's Schiaparelli probe as it hit the surface of Mars on Wednesday has been imaged by an American satellite.
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has identified a large dark patch in the robot's targeted landing zone consistent with a high-velocity impact.
Schiaparelli is widely thought to have crashed and been destroyed.
Data transmitted from the probe before it lost contact indicated that its descent systems did not work properly.
Its parachute was jettisoned too early and its retrorockets, designed to slow the robot to a hover just above the surface, fired only for a few seconds. They should have operated for half a minute.
The MRO imagery is not quite definitive because the resolution is low - just six metres per pixel. Its context is persuasive, however.
The roughly 15m by 40m dark patch, which is probably dust and rock fragments thrown out from the impact, is sited some 5.5km west of Schiaparelli's expected touchdown point in the equatorial Meridiani Plain.
Tellingly, the feature is not present in previous MRO pictures of the location.
The clincher, though, may be the artefact 1km to the south of the patch. This white blob looks to be Schiaparelli's 15m-wide parachute which would have floated down behind the probe. Again, this was not present in earlier pictures.-read more
