Chapter 1

A Pail of Air

By FRITZ LEIBER

Illustrated by ED ALEXANDER

Galaxy Science Fiction December 1951.

The dark star passed, bringing with it

eternal night and turning history into

incredible myth in a single generation!

Pa had sent me out to get an extra pail of air. I’d just about scooped it full and most of the warmth had leaked from my fingers when I saw the thing.

You know, at first I thought it was a young lady. Yes, a beautiful young lady’s face all glowing in the dark and looking at me from the fifth floor of the opposite apartment, which hereabouts is the floor just above the white blanket of frozen air. I’d never seen a live young lady before, except in the old magazines—Sis is just a kid and Ma is pretty sick and miserable—and it gave me such a start that I dropped the pail. Who wouldn’t, knowing everyone on Earth was dead except Pa and Ma and Sis and you?

School Dinners

Yes it's a right for children to have at least one hot meal a day,but as for them starving I personally believe this is society gone wrong.

AS a child I never went without a hot meal dispite my parents being in low income jobs, their coped through the 3day week, petrol crisis, bread strike and managed to survive, yes I had free school meals at school but back then it was looked like a stigma.

Also most supermarkets and good outlets you can buy a lot for around 50+60 Pounds ,enough with good management to let your children eat a hot meal.

we have lost the skills of making do,you need to do these main thing s even on low incomes -pay rent, electricity, gas, oil, water, food that's the essential s of all family s and like I was told although my unemployment and now disability benefits the rest is a luxur ies.
