well this is just a social group so there aren't any aims or future plans. started the group a few years ago under a different title, it was initially called St. Ives Hippies, as post hippies who lived in st. ives in 1973 had a few reunions. But the site didn't really take off like my Mousehole group, so I closed it down, and then re-titled it, and it's just starting to take off. There are 'hippy' photos in the photo box amongst the other numerous photos-https://www.facebook.com/groups/339011862813132/?fref=ts

FORGOTTEN ENGLISH AN ARTICLE

English changes all the time, often in subtle ways—so it's not surprising that we've lost many delightful words and phrases along the way. In his wonderful book Forgotten English, Jeffrey Kacirk takes a closer look at the origins and histories of these language relics. Here are a few of our favorite words from the book; for more, check out Kacirk's website. 1. ASTROLOGAMAGE The medieval era's Miss Cleos, these so-called wise men made predictions based on what was happening in the sky. 2. CRAPULENCE This word, from the Latin root crapula, arose in the 18th century. According to Kacirk, it "denoted intestinal and cranial distress ... arising from intemperance and debauchery." Put another way: If you get crunk, expect crapulence. 3. EYE-SERVANT A term describing a servant who did his duty only lazily except when within sight of his master, "a form of insincerity known as 'eye-service,'" Kacirk notes. Replace servant with employee and master with boss, and you could probably know a few people to whom this term would apply. 4. FLITTERWOCHEN This Old English expression (probably borrowed from German) meant "fleeting weeks," and refers to what we today call a honeymoon. Flitterwochen is, obviously, a much better word. 5. FRIBBLER Though this term comes from the 18th century, chances are you know a fribbler. He says he's really into a lady, but just won't commit. The behavior of a fribbler was called fribbledom, by the way. 6. GROANING-CHEESE Back in the day, husbands didn't just hold their wives' hands during childbirth—they gave them the medieval version of an epidural: Cheese. Groaning-cheese was said to soothe a lady in labor, and so husbands paired it with groaning-cake and groaning-drink. anti-slavery AN ARTICLE

“I hope my case inspires you to know that you’ve made a difference. The work of anti-slavery activists such as yourself is vitally important. Thank you again for your efforts to ensure my safe release. Keep doing what you do in the fight for freedom.” Dear MARK, These are the words of Krishna Upadhyaya, an anti-slavery researcher who was detained in Qatar while interviewing migrant workers experiencing conditions of modern slavery. After 54,034 messages from the Walk Free community he was released without charge and returned home safely to his family. As 2015 begins, we’ve been reflecting on what our community and our partners have achieved in the last 12 months. You helped to win over a dozen anti-slavery campaigns last year. Together we’ve: Fought for stronger anti-slavery laws, including securing a new ground-breaking international protocol on forced labour.1 Held businesses to account: we persuaded Walmart and Tesco, two of the biggest food retailers in the world, to play a role in ending modern slavery in the Thai fishing industry.2 Defended the rights of anti-slavery activists, by fighting for the release of Krishna Upadhyaya and Gundev Ghimire when they disappeared while investigating working conditions in Qatar.3 Thank you for your incredible support -- we never cease to be amazed and inspired by your dedication. We want to make 2015 even more successful as we fight to end modern slavery -- will you help us? Click to donate your time and expertise to help end modern slavery. We believe every member of the Walk Free community has something unique and valuable to contribute to the movement to end slavery once and for all. As the new year begins, please consider becoming a Walk Free Freedom Leader -- you can find out more here. Thank you for everything you do, The whole Walk Free team P.S. Experts believe foam on the water freezes overnight, pushing and bumping against each other to become circular. The discs may then grow overnight when the temperatures fall again, collecting new foam. During the day, when the discs soften in the sun, particularly around the edges, the rims are built up as the pieces collide in the water.

Antarctic photo science archive unlocked

Aerial photos from the 1940s and 1950s are being used to probe the climate history of the Antarctic Peninsula. UK scientists are comparing the images with newly acquired data sets to assess the changes that have occurred in some of the region's 400-plus glaciers. The old and modern information has to be very carefully aligned if it is to show up any differences reliably. And that is a big challenge when snow and ice obscure ground features that might otherwise act as visual anchors. But the researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), Newcastle University and University of Gloucestershire believe they are cracking the problem. "We want to use these pictures to work out volume and mass-balance changes in the glaciers through time," explained Dr Lucy Clarke from the University of Gloucestershire. "There are tens of thousands of these historical images, held by the British Antarctic Survey and the US Geological Survey. "So, they've long been around, but it's only now that we've had the capability to extract the 3D data from them." Dr Clarke has been presenting the work at this week's American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in San Francisco.read more-http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-enviDeception Islandronment-30471542
