Sun's magnetic field boosts lightning strikes across the UK

lightningThe number of lightning strikes across the UK has been significantly affected by solar activity, according to new research.
Scientists say the Sun's magnetic field is bending the Earth's own field, increasing our exposure to cosmic rays.
These rays are believed to increase the number of thunderclouds and trigger lightning bolts in some locations.
Over five years, the UK experienced 50% more strikes when the Earth's magnetic field was affected by the Sun.
Fields of influence
The manner is which lightning bolts are triggered has long puzzled scientists as the air is known to be a good insulator of electricity.
Something else needs to come into play to conduct the electrical charges built up in thunder clouds down to the ground.
Since the 1990s, researchers have speculated that the magnetic activity of the Sun could be linked to lightning on Earth.
Current theories hold that high energy particles called galactic cosmic rays provide the necessary link that lets the current flow into a lightning bolt.
This latest work suggests that the orientation of the Sun's magnetic field is playing a significant role in the number of strikes.
The researchers believe the field is like a bar magnet, so as our star spins around sometimes the field points towards the Earth and sometimes away.
"What we found was there is significantly more lightning in the UK when the field is pointing towards the Sun than when its pointing away which was surprising," said Dr Matt Owens from the University of Reading, the lead author on the study.
"What we think is happening is that the Sun's magnetic field is pulling or pushing on the Earth's field and that's letting energetic charged particles down into the atmosphere at different locations and the idea is that these actually trigger lightning."
"For lightning, you need a thin conducting channel like a wire, and galactic cosmic http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-30103561rays can provide this thin column of ionisation in the atmosphere."READ MORE-

Geckos inspire 'Spider-Man' gloves

Gecko climbingThe way geckos climb has inspired a device that allowed a 70kg man to scale a glass wall like Spider-Man. Much research has gone into trying to unlock the clever way that little geckos climb. But trying to use gecko adhesion to work at larger scales - such as on a human hand - without any loss of performance has proven difficult. The hand-sized silicone pads created by a team at Stanford University keep their adhesive strength at all sizes. They employ the same attractive and repulsive forces between molecules - known as van der Waals forces - that geckos use. Although the forces are very weak, the effect is multiplied across the many tiny hairs that cover the toes of a gecko, allowing them to stick firmly to surfaces. Along the same lines, the Stanford team created tiny tiles called microwedges to harness van der Waals forces. They were able to produce a dry adhesive even more efficient than that of the gecko. In tests, the 70kg (11 stone) climber successfully scaled a 3.6m-high vertical glass wall using 140 sq cm silicone pads in each hand. The climber tested the adhesive hundreds of times on the wall without failure. Earlier this year, America's Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) demonstrated another climbing device which allowed a person to scale a sheer glass wall. However, the exact details of their climbing method remain classified. This latest effort was also a collaboration with Darpa. The agency's Z-Man programme aims to develop biologically-inspired climbing aids for soldiers without the need for ropes and ladders. The team at Stanford have published their findings in the Royal Society journal Interface.

Paul Roberts interviewed by mark antony raines aka ghostman

Hi Mark

I'm not sure if your directing these questions at me personally or a me the booking agent?  But here goes.....

hope this is okay?
Rich

I'm inspired by music, it's always been there for me through the good and the bad times. I struggle with having a 'normal' job as I dislike repetition so I've tried to find create jobs that fuel my passions or allow me plenty of time to live how I like.

My aims are to build a stable music agency business that allows me to live comfortably and where I can work remotely from a beach, cottage in a mountain, festival or city. Where ever has internet or mobile data. This is how I can make modern technology work for me so why would I not want to take advantage of it? Along the way I get to shout about music that I love and try and pass that enthusiasm on to venues, promoters and music lovers, plus I meet great people and I've already had some great trips in the UK and Europe.

Trying to build a business is my plan for the future, I absolutely love the process of actually figuring out how to do this (as I have very little experience in this area of the industry)for me that is in itself a very creative experience. Most people I know quit their jobs to go to another job. I quit mine to to invent a job. This January will mark my first year in business and I'm happy with the results and I hope that next year will be even better.

It is thought to have been the site of an Anglo-Saxon castle, and is said to have been where Hubba the Dane attacked Devon and was repelled (perhaps by Alfred the Great or by the Earl of Devon). A little over a mile away along the coast is a Village called Appledore. Between the Villages of Appledore and Northam, is 'Bloody Corner' where is a rock called 'Hubba's Rock' which is supposed to be the site where Hubba the Dane was killed by the Anglo-Saxon (or Devonshire) fyrd. The line was wholly situated on the peninsula made up of Westward Ho!, Northam and Appledore with extensive sand dunes the Torridge and Taw estuary. Karen (Jarnagin) Pedroza Host at Spirit Travels radio, Author of Spirit World Paranormal chronicles and Afterlife Investigations interviewed by mark antony raines aka ghostman

What inspired me was my daughter, she had an experience with the paranormal a few year ago that prompted my decision to call in a team and after watching them do their investigation I realized this was something I wanted to do in order to help people with issues with the paranormal. The radio show was in all reality something I hadn't planned on but after numerous interviews and then request to start my own show I decided why not give it a try. My goals are to expand my radio show to a larger listening audience in time and I also plan on becoming involved in some of the conventions to bring awareness to the dangers of investigating. If I can reach just one person who feels it's something of interest as to why it's so important to not investigate on their own then I have made a difference one person at a time.

Beavers on River Otter in Devon could stay free

A beaver sits on the bank of the Rover OtterBeavers living on the River Otter in Devon could be allowed to remain in the wild if free of disease. The government had intended to capture six beavers, test for disease and re-home them in captivity. It is unclear where the beavers came from, but campaigners say they should be allowed to stay. The government has now indicated that the beavers could be tested near the river and released if disease-free. In October, environmental charity Friends of the Earth, launched a legal challenge over the government's claim that the beavers were non-native, could be diseased, and should be removed. It is believed the group, including three juveniles born this year, are the only wild beavers in England. 'Positive steps' A spokeswoman for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said: "Our priority has been to ensure humane treatment for the beavers while safeguarding human health, so we'll be testing the beavers close to the River Otter which will be better for their welfare than moving them elsewhere.red more-http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-30043619

William Hillard-Aymerich INTERVIEWED BY MARK ANTONY RAINES AKA GHOSTMAN

Questions What inspired you? My inspiration came for the many paranormal events that happened to me in my younger days. From an early age I have been able to sense spirits and at times see them. I later found out from conversations with grandmother that she also shared and had many similar events. One when I was like 5 years old is burned in my memory. Late night going to bed she and I happened to be talking about ghosts. Just being the little stinker that I am I knocked on the wall and asked for a reply… We got one! I knew it was not her because she was on the bed and away from the wall I was next to. It also could not have been anyone else because she and I were alone in the house. It is an event I cannot forget I refer to it in talks as my starting point. Ghosts are my strong point in the paranormal but also being from Costa Rica and living there for a while I had been witness to many UFO encounters with my cousin Ronald Aymerich. I sometimes wonder if at times both events are connected. What are your aims? To me this is kind of a selfish journey. I am not here to convince and make anyone believe in the paranormal. It is like faith and a very personal thing. You either believe or you don’t trying to win over converts is a waste of energy. I am doing this because I have had so many experiences that I want to know what they are and were. If it ends up not being ghosts and aliens I am good as long as it is the truth. I am open with my findings th9ugh because I know many are in this for the same reasons and I welcome them on this journey with me. As long as you are open minded and not trying to force your views and opinions on anyone. I believe in what I call true Paranormal Unity… Where we all speak our opinions and learn from one another. Even if I don’t agree with you, what you say is of value to me because it may fit part of the puzzle of a much larger picture. It may also be a point of view that is more solid than mine. But I see too many people in the field belittle one another just to make their view be the only one, or worse to shine in their own 15 minutes of fame. Many in the Paranormal Unity camp are about unity in only their view. It’s sad; right now we have no clue what we are dealing with, only hypothesis at best. We are not even an established science yet. The paranormal and metaphysics are at best a pseudoscience that is trying to stand up on its own two legs and get credibility to find a manner to be explained in the scientific method. The main issue is that most of us have a refusal to explore our findings and an over-reliance on confirmation rather than refutation… It’s okay though psychology and sociology were in the same boat once so we are in good company. As long as we try to get past getting caught up always believing on the following… • Common cognitive errors from personal experience (Not all personal experiences are paranormal) • Erroneous sensationalistic mass media coverage (Not to believe all we see on TV) • Sociocultural factors (Even though you faith or culture believes in the metaphysical and ghosts. To find the truth we have to put them aside and study as a blank state. Don’t make your belief fit the facts) • Poor or erroneous science education (Learn some true science and the scientific method! Our goal is to try to find a way to make these experiences studied as science) Paranormal Unity should be open so we can learn to take these odd things and make them truly something that can be studied and not just gathered as cool evidence. And it is cool! What plans do you have for the future? I will be going back in to the field investigating some… I have been out of the field in as much as investigating for a while now. Many of us get so caught up in it that we lose touch with family… So I took time off for them. I also will be doing my lecture series in events again for 2015. I am working on dates and location, none arre solid yet. I am hoping to hit the west coast of the US and go across the pond again too. I am also going to complete the second book of some of my paranormal adventures by the fall of 2015 You can keep up with me and my adventures on twitter - https://twitter.com/willaymerich and Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/willaymerich and on my website willaymerich.com

Down syndrome-MY NEPTHEW HAS THIS TO ME HE IS JUST A PERSON LIKE ME

What Is Down Syndrome? Down syndrome is one of the most common genetic birth defects. Usually, children born with the condition have some degree of mental retardation, as well as characteristic physical features. Many of these children also have other health problems. Each year in the U.S., approximately one in every 800 to 1,000 newborns has Down syndrome. This results in approximately 5,000 children born with Down syndrome each year. In the U.S. today, Down syndrome affects approximately 350,000 people. As many as 80% of adults with this condition reach age 55, and many live longer. The most common form of Down syndrome is often called "trisomy 21," because individuals with this condition have three copies of the 21st chromosome. What Causes Down Syndrome? Normally, each cell in the human body contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, which contain the genetic material that determines all our inherited characteristics. We receive half of each chromosome pair from our mother and the other half from our father. Individuals with the most common form of Down syndrome, trisomy 21, have an extra 21st chromosome. No one knows exactly why this chromosomal error occurs, but it does appear to be related to the age of the mother. At age 25, a woman has a one in 1,250 risk for having a child with Down syndrome. The risk increases to one in 952 at age 30, to one in 378 at age 35, to one in 106 at age 40 and one in 35 at age 45. However, 80% of children born with Down syndrome are born to mothers under the age of 35. This is because most babies, in general, are born to younger women. Be sure to check with your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant if you have a family history of Down syndrome. Six Scottish wildcat conservation areas identified AS PART OF MYSTERYCATBLOG

Scottish wildcat kittenSix priority areas for Scottish wildcat conservation have been identified following research commissioned by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). Wildcats becoming an endangered species due to mixing with domestic cats, disease and loss of habitat. Thee Angus Glens, Strathbogie in Aberdeenshire, Strathavon in Moray and Morvern, Strathpeffer and Dulnain in the Highlands are the six areas. The research suggested these were where wildcats had the best chance. Nine areas were assessed as part of the multi-agency Wildcat Action project. Work to conserve wildcats in the six selected sites is to start next year. Scientists used live trapping, cameras and analysed cat faeces, hair and skin to determine the presence of wildcats, and wild-living cats.READ MORE-http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-30002335
