Brain's taste secrets uncovered

Sweet or sour? Duping our taste buds
The brain has specialist neurons for each of the five taste categories - salty, bitter, sour, sweet and umami - US scientists have discovered.
The study, published in the journal Nature, should settle years of debate on how the brain perceives taste.
The Columbia University team showed the separate taste sensors on the tongue had a matching partner in the brain.
The scientists hope the findings could be used to help reverse the loss of taste sensation in the elderly.
It is a myth that you taste sweet only on the tip of the tongue.
Each of the roughly 8,000 taste buds scattered over the tongue is capable of sensing the full suite of tastes.
But specialised cells within the taste bud are tuned to either salty, bitter, sour, sweet or umami tastes.
When they detect the signal, a message is sent to the brain. Although how the brain deals with the information has been up for discussion.
Accounting for taste
A team at Columbia University engineered mice so that their taste neurons would fluoresce when they were activated.
They then trained their endoscopes on the neurons deep at their base of the brain.
The animals were fed chemicals to trigger either a salty, bitter, sour, sweet or umami response on the tongue and the researchers monitored the change in the brain.
They found a "hard wired" connection between tongue and brain.
Prof Charles Zuker told the BBC News website: "The cells were beautifully tuned to discrete individual taste qualities, so you have a very nice match between the nature of the cells in your tongue and the quality they represent [in the brain]."
It scotches the alternative idea that brain cells respond to multiple tastes.READ MORE-http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-29912877
Halyomorpha halys -stink bug is coming
Brown marmorated stink bug
Halyomorpha halys, also known as the brown marmorated stink bug, or simply the stink bug, is an insect in the family Pentatomidae, and it is native to China, Japan and Taiwan. Wikipedia
Scientific name: Halyomorpha halys-this so called stink bug is expected to be visiting british shores.Name is due to the bug giving off a garbage like smell.
The problem for home owners begins in the fall. As the temperatures begin to drop, the stink bugs try to stay warm by clustering on the sides of homes and other buildings. They are particularly fond of the south and west sides of the building because those sides are warmed by the afternoon sun. Many stink bugs will congregate there and they will inevitably work their way into the building through small cracks or crevices, door jams, attic vents, and other gaps in the structure. They are seeking a suitable place to stay warm and spend the winter. Once inside the building, they go dormant and they fully expect to stay dormant until spring. The problem is that every time there is a warm sunny winter day their hiding spot warms up and they think it is spring. After spending the winter months tucked away in the walls or the attic, they have simply forgotten how they got in. In their effort to get back outside they accidently end up inside the home. They don't want to be inside at all. They are merely looking for a way to get outside. This may happen all at once in the spring, or be sporadic all through the winter and spring, depending on the weather.
Dealing With Stink Bugs
“Uughh! What is that smell? It’s these bugs! They really smell foul!” We are hearing this more and more these days. The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) has become firmly entrenched here in the U.S. After being accidentally introduced from Asia into Pennsylvania in the late 1990’s, it has quickly spread across the country and become a major pest to both home owners and farmers alike.
Getting Rid of Stink Bugs and Control for homes
Prevention:
The key to getting rid of and eliminating indoor stink bugs in the spring is preventing their entry in the fall. Once they have entered the home, there aren't a lot of treatment options. The easiest way to remove them once they are indoors is with a vacuum cleaner; however the vacuum may take on the characteristic smell of the stink bug. If you’ve had them you know the smell.

Mechanical Exclusion:
Mechanical exclusion is the best method to keep stink bugs from entering homes and buildings. Cracks around windows, doors, siding, utility pipes, behind chimneys, and underneath the wood fascia and other openings should be sealed with good quality silicone or silicone-latex caulk. Damaged screens on doors and windows should be repaired or replaced.
Spraying the exterior of the home early in the fall can offer an additional layer of protection.

Pest Control Treatment for Stink bugs
Products such as D-Fense SC , Cyzmic CS, Bifen IT, Cyper WP, and Demon WP are very effective at preventing the stink bugs from congregating on the side of the home, thus preventing their entry. Timing of the application is important. As the night time temperatures dip into the low 50's or lower you can expect the stink bugs to arrive. Focus on spraying the south and west exposure of the house. The more surface area you cover the better the results will be. This may require the use of a ladder to reach the uppermost areas around the roof. Remember to use proper ladder safety protocol and, as always, be sure to read and follow all label directions for the pesticide you are using.
So keep in mind that while stink bugs are a nuisance they can be dealt with. It's not easy or fun to do but avoiding the stinky smell they bring is worth the effort.

Identification:
Stink bugs can range in colors, but are commonly green or brown. They are about 5/8 inch long. The adults have a triangular thorax. All stink bugs have the characteristic five-sided shield shape. Their eggs are barrel shaped . Sting Bugs nymphs resemble adults in shape but are smaller and have contrasting color patterns
Stink bugs give out a foul odor.
Damage:
Stink bugs feed on plants and shrubbery. Generally thought of as an agricultural pest, stink bugs will take up residence around any garden or landscape rich with plants and flowers.
Stink bugs feed on buds and seedpods, sucking juice from plants. This results from badly formed buds and fruit.
Diet:
Plants are the primary source of food for stink bugs. They feed by sucking on the sap from pods, buds, blossoms and seeds. Some species of stink bugs even feed on juices from caterpillars and beetle larva. They are often crop pests on cabbage, cotton, beans, squash or melons.
Life Cycle and History:
Stink bugs do not reproduce inside, therefore they invade homes from the outside. They go through a simple metamorphosis: egg, nymph, and adult.
There are one to two generations of stink bugs each year .Peak population sizes occur in late September to early October. It is during these months that stink bugs may become agricultural pests. Adults are sometimes dormant in the winter, overwintering in logs, leaf litter or other similar habitats where they are unlikely to be disturbed
Nymphs feed throughout the summer and molt to adults in late summer.
The eggs of a stink bug can be found on the underside of leaves in clumps of 20-30 eggs. Adults mate in the spring and females will lay eggs on plants. These eggs will be laid in groups and are not plant specific. The eggs are oval in shape, ranging from light yellow to a yellowish-reddish color, equipped with tiny spines forming fine lines along the eggs. The nymphs, similar in appearance to the adult stink bug, are differentiated by its lack of wings. From the nymph stage, the stink bug will molt (5 stages)before becoming a full grown adult. They take a couple months to mature.
Due to milder temperatures the South has the highest populations.

VALENTINA Lomborg (GhostGirlCrew@verizon.net) interviewed by mark antony raines aka ghostman
what inspired you?I am not sure INSPIRED is the right word. I was never INSPIRED per se to be a psychic. It is not something people set out to be as a career. Events throughout my childhood and a physical accident in my 20’s left me falling into this ‘duty’ to the world I would call it.wah are your aims?
I don’t have any ‘aims’ either, I just want to prove to as many people as possible, that there IS LIFE AFTER DEATH. I plan to do that by sharing all my experiences, showing my evidence and continuing my extensive research.what plans do you have for the future?Does anyone really make plans for the future anymore?! lol. I am currently writing my first book on the paranormal experiences and cases I have been on. From there I hope to follow up with a second one dealing more with the dark side of the paranormal.
Where life takes me? We shall see!

Bigfoot Observation Group a acticle
I saw something bipedal in a dark creekbed at dusk as a teenager. My vision was poor under the conditions since I wasn't wearing my glasses. It scared my friends. I didn't have what I would consider to be a DEFINITIVE sighting as a result. My plans for the future is to have a DEFINITIVE sighting at some date in the future if that's possible. Bigfooting is also a great excuse to get outdoors even if nothing happens. I've had some interesting things occur from time to time.

Sheri Myler interviewed by mark antony raines aka ghostman
What inspired you?
As a budding cryptozoologist, I have read many stories of mystery animal sightings and ensuing investigations. A recurring theme is the inclusion and importance of eye witness testimony. This is often criticised by those who do not realise that this is merely the starting point of the investigation. However, as a key element in the initiation of research, it is important to consider the reliability witnesses to potentially mysterious sightings.
What are your aims?
The aim of my dissertation was to consider the first step in this type of investigation and assess the reliability of witness. I limited my research to the British public and their knowledge of British animals. I developed a quiz-style questionnaire to hand out randomly to people, while trying to include a range of people, to avoid bias. The data collection phase is ongoing at this time. Analysis of this data will hopefully provide an answer to how well the British public know what animals are around them.
What plans do you have for the future?
On completion of this dissertation, and indeed my degree course, I intend to develop further in this line of work. I hope to be able to optimise the process of cryptozoological research, for the betterment of the field as whole as well as myself, when I embark on my own investigations. At this time, I am uncertain as to whether I will go immediately onto a post-graduate degree, or develop my work experience for a year or so first.

EARTH AND OCEAN MARTIAL ARTS A ARTICLE
smalllogo.jpg
INSTRUCTORS of Cheng Ba Gua Zhang
Mr. Alex Gallifent
students/alexgallifent.jpg
I began my Tai Chi practice in 2004 studying under Lindsay Jenkins of the Cotton hands Tai Chi school. I studied under Lindsay on a weekly basis for 3 years learning the Peking 24 step form, the Shi Ba Shi qigong set, the eight silk brocade qigong set and the Zhuan Zhuang standing postures. During this 3 year period I also studied Long fist Kung fu from Matt Williams of the ancestral mountains kung fu school (now learnkungfu.org) on a twice weekly basis reaching Orange belt.
I then moved to Devon in 2007 and continued my Tai chi practice under Tim Prescott of Tien Tien Tai Chi Chuan. From him I learned the simplified 24 step Tai chi form, the 42 step competition form and the 38 step Sun style Tai chi form. I studied with Tim on a weekly basis for about 2-3 years.
From 2007 to the present I have been studying Cheng style Baguazhang from Andy Coles of Earth and Ocean martial arts on a twice weekly basis. From him I have learned the eight main energy postures of the Cheng system as well as the eight main palm changes. I have also been taught the swimming dragon form, the Bagua sword form and the Deer horn blades form. I have been complimenting this practice with the home study of the Bruce Frantzis Bagua mastery program.
I have also learned the Xing Yi Quan (Shanxi style) 5 element fist form from Andy Coles.
In March 2010 I attended a week long intensive Tai Chi training event in Brighton where I learned internal components of Tai Chi from Bruce Frantzis of Energy Arts.
In 2010/2011 I studied the Cheng Man Ching short form under Ranald Macdonald.
In 2011 I attended and passed a Sun style level two instructor training course under Faye Yip of Deyin Tai Chi Chuan. This course qualifies me to teach the 38 step Sun style Tai Chi form.
At the same time I started an 18 month Tai Chi instructor course with Tai Chi nation, which I passed with a distinction. The course qualifies me to teach the 24 step compact Tai Chi form, the Shi Ba Shi qigong set and Daoyin practices.
I have also studied Dragon and Tiger Qigong with Mike Turner of Better Health Tai Chi.
As well as the above I also practice the 88 step Yang Tai Chi Form, the Marriage of Heaven and Earth Chi Kung, the Wu style Tai Chi short form and Taoist and Zen meditation.
2013 April, being granted recognition and certified by Mr.Andy Coles to be an instructor of Cheng Ba Gua Zhang.

In 1987 I remember watching a martial arts film one night when I was just 9 years old, and I said to my mum & dad, I want to do that! So I went along to the Barnstaple Leisure centre and joined up with Mr. Peter Hill learning Wado Ryu karate, I managed to get my 'Yellow belt' in 1988.
When I turned 11 years old I trained in a Kung Fu style called Lau Gar with Mr. Chef Prince. I studied with him for 3 years.
In 1996 I started Freestyle Tae Kwon Do gaining my Black Belt in 2001.
In May 2001 I then started training with Andy Coles in what became Earth Ocean Martial Arts and have been their ever since.
I've also completed a Basic body guard course, held a SIA licence in security, I am First Aid trained, and have an up to date CRB enhanced disclosure certificate (DBS).

I began my martial arts training at the age of 12, studying and practising Kyokushin kai Karate for 3 years, which acted as a good foundation for training that I undertook later.
In 1993 I began training in Practical Wudang Tai Chi Chuan in London under Dave Durrant and Norman Jones, both early students of Sifu Dan Doherty. Over the next 6 years I attended many workshops with Sifu Dan Doherty and competed in Tui Shou competition, winning the British Open Tai Chi Championships for my weight in 1995 and coming runner up the following year.
In 1996 I began teaching Practical Tai Chi Chuan.
I moved to Australia in 1997 and continued to train with a Wudang Tai Chi Chuan club in Melbourne.
In 1998 I began training in a style of Kung Fu called Po Ket under Dr Peter Lewis, which is a striped down derivative of Choy Ley Fut Kung Fu, that literally translates as Full Contact. I trained and competed in full contact open style, open weight (at 65 kg), Coming 3rd in the Victorian ISKA state titles.
During my study of Tai chi I also became very interested in the practise of Chi Kung, Nei Kung and meditation, and I studied and learnt from both my Tai chi teachers and Tibetan Lamas residing in Melbourne, which I maintained during any periods whilst not formally training with a club. Also during this period I also worked as a fitness instructor and personal trainer in gyms in Berkshire, London and Melbourne over a 10 year period,
I returned to the UK in 2001 and did not train with a club until I began training in Hung Gar Kung Fu for 2 years in Barnstaple.
In Jan 2012 I began training with Mr Andy Coles in both Earth Ocean Martial Arts, Cheng BaGuaZhang and Shan Xi style Xing Yi Quan.

Ghostly presence' created in lab
Feelings of a ghostly presence - the sense that someone is close-by when no-one is there - lie in the mind, a study has concluded.
Scientists say that they have identified the parts of the brain that are responsible for generating these spooky sensations.
They have also created an experiment that makes some people feel like there is a ghost nearby.
The research is published in the journal Current Biology.
There are many tales of the paranormal, but an often-reported phenomenon is that of the invisible apparition.
Dr Giulio Rognini, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), says: "The sensation is very vivid. They feel somebody but they cannot see it. It is always a felt presence."
He said it was common in those who experience extreme conditions, such as mountaineers and explorers, and people with some neurological conditions, among others.
"What is astonishing is that they frequently report that the movements they are doing or the posture they are assuming at that specific moment is replicated by the presence. So if the patient is sitting, they feel the presence is sitting. If they are standing, the presence is standing, and so on," he explained.READ MORE-http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-29939672

Dorothy Davies interviewed by mark antony raines aka ghostman
What inspired me... I have written stories since I could write, but the trigger came through copies of Astounding and Fantasy and Science Fiction magazines, given to me by an uncle. SF in all its glory took over and sparked my already fertile imagination. From then it was headfirst into Ray Bradbury's worlds ... and there was no stopping me! I wrote tons of fan fiction until about 1980 when it got serious and I began writing professionally. I haven't stopped since.
I took a copy editing course and began working long distance for a small independent publisher. Within a year I was working at their premises and five years later I took over as editor. So... a long time editing too. Now I edit horror anthologies for Thirteen O'clock Press, released through Horrified Press, also independent (prefer it that way!) and write my horror stories and books for them.
Spiritually I have always been drawn to that side of life, I recall reading books on opening the third eye in my early teens. But the awakening only came when I finally broke away from a long confining marriage and came to live on what is officially the Isle of Wight -old name Isle of Spirits. My mediumship developed from the time I arrived here.
My aims, to help as many as I can, either writing or spiritually. Around my writing I do tarot and stone readings - these can be booked through www.chooseapsychic.com
I work full time in a shop selling curios and other items and have a wonderful time keeping the shop floor looking inviting and clean and re-arranging the window displays to suit the seasons and the festivals. The Festival of Remembrance is close and there will be a full War Remembrance window in place by Monday afternoon, complete with poppies.
Plans for the future, to live as long as possible, looking at being 100, and getting as much out of life as I can during that time!
Thanks for asking me!!

That way, it gives authors, as well as viewers of my site, more of a selected chance to view author pages at Amazon. Just thought it would be a way to help authors get another foot hold on readers. I believe as a writer we should help each other to gain an audience. After all, that is why we write. Have a most splendid day. VLZ.I've lived all around upstate New York. Syracuse and Rochester and Henrietta and Toronto Canada and London Canada and Tampa Florida and Oldsmar Florida and New Port Richey Florida Savannah and Montezuma Port Byron and South Butler. Of all those places, there never was a place better than home, and home is where the heart is. Some of those places I left my heart, but as for the others, they were just a passing in time, where I learned new things, met a lot of people of a lot of races and discovered we all have one thing in common; we are all human beings on this round ball in the vast universe of space who are all trying to make their way. The Spirit of Things II: Here We Go Again
“By opening your inner being to enhance your intuitive energies, you will have the opportunity to become more aware of Spirit. A conscious interaction with your energy can help validate and communicate with your Spirit Guides. It will “open that door” and give you that much-needed nudge to allow a clearer awareness of who you are. I should know, because my Spirit Guides have again given me the guidance I needed to be able to write this second book.”

This app may help someone you know so please share-The Samaritans charity has launched a new app which will notify Twitter users if people they follow on the site appear to be suicidal.
Samaritans Radar uses an algorithm to identify key words and phrases which indicate distress.
They include "tired of being alone", "hate myself", "depressed", "help me" and "need someone to talk to."
Users who have signed up for the scheme will receive an email alert if someone they follow tweets these statements.
The app asks whether the tweets are cause for concern.
However it does not yet identify sarcasm, according to the website.
The charity says it will not get involved directly unless requested.
'not private'
Joe Ferns, executive director of policy, research and development at Samaritans, told the BBC the app was not designed to be a furtive tracking tool.
"Radar is only picking up tweets that are public, giving you an opportunity to see tweets that you would have seen anyway," he said.
"But imagine that a friend had posted something in the early hours of the morning, you're on the way to work or college and your Twitter feed is full of messages that are arguably less important - Samaritans Radar gives you the opportunity to see that tweet again and have it highlighted to you.
"It's not looking over your shoulder, it's not looking anything that's private, it's just giving you the opportunity to see something and act on it."
Samaritans Radar was created by digital agency Jam and uses Twitter's API. It is primarily aimed at 18-35 year olds.
"They are 'digital natives' - growing up using new technology and the first generation to grow up with computers in their home," said Patricia Cartes, global head of trust and safety outreach at Twitter.
"They are the most active age group across social platforms and spend an average of just over three hours daily on social networks."

Samaritans said it was looking at extending the service to other social media networks in the future.
line
Analysis: Rory Cellan-Jones, technology correspondent
Samaritans Radar is aimed in particular at a generation which lives its life online - and sometimes finds it easier to express its deepest hopes and fears in a tweet rather than face to face.
The app has some smart technology which will learn from its users to distinguish phrases that are really indicative of suicidal tendencies.
Samaritans is aware that there may be a "creepy" factor, with users worried that someone is looking over their shoulder as they and their friends tweet.

Body clock: 'Rush hour' transformation discovered
A pair of "rush hours" every day rapidly change the way tissues throughout the body work, scientists have discovered.
The animal study, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, monitored the function of cells, in 12 tissues, through the day.
It found large shifts in activity just before dawn and dusk.
Experts said the findings could help time medication to hit sweet-spots in the body clock.
The body's internal clock is known to drive huge changes - it alters alertness, mood, physical strength and even the risk of a heart attack in a daily rhythm.read more-http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-29747358
Giant tortoise makes 'miraculous' stable recovery
Where once there were 15, now more than 1,000 giant tortoises lumber around Espanola, one of the Galapagos Islands.
After 40 years' work reintroducing captive animals, a detailed study of the island's ecosystem has confirmed it has a stable, breeding population.
Numbers had dwindled drastically by the 1960s, but now the danger of extinction on Espanola appears to have passed.
Galapagos tortoises, of which there are 11 remaining subspecies, weigh up to 250kg and live longer than 100 years.
The study, based on decades of observations of the variety found on Espanola, was published in the journal Plos One.

It looks like we can step back out of the picture”
Prof James Gibbs
SUNY-ESF
Slow release
It offers some good news that contrasts with the tale of Lonesome George, the very last of the related subspecies found on Pinta, on the other side of the archipelago. George's death, at the age of about 100, made international news in 2012.
Lead author Prof James Gibbs told BBC News the finding on Espanola was "one of those rare examples of a true conservation success story, where we've rescued something from the brink of extinction and now it's literally taking care of itself".
Prof Gibbs, from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry at the State University of New York (SUNY-ESF), said he felt "honoured" to be reporting the obvious success of the reintroduction programme, which the Galapagos Islands National Park Service commenced in 1973.READ MORE-http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-29801967
Newt flesh fungus 'brought by pets'
Zoologists say a skin-eating fungus threatens salamanders and newts across Europe, and probably arrived on pet amphibians imported from Asia.
It was discovered in the Netherlands in 2013 after wiping out all but 10 of the country's fire salamanders.
Now tests show that the fungus causes deadly skin diseases in many related species, but not those from Asia.
The findings, published in Science, suggest that the fungus coexisted with Asian salamanders for 30 million years.
Researchers from Imperial College and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) collaborated on the study with teams in the Netherlands and Belgium.

There appear to be no real barriers that prevent the spread of the fungus throughout Europe”
Prof An Martel
Ghent University
The parasitic fungus, called Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, is related to another fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) that causes a similar disease in frogs and other amphibians, mostly in the tropics.
According to the new study, the recently discovered "B. sal" does not affect frogs or toads but kills a wide variety of salamanders.
It rapidly invades and eats an animal's skin, which is crucial to its survival because it helps it to breathe.
"Most of the salamander species that come into contact with this fungus die within weeks," said lead author Prof An Martel from Ghent University, Belgium.
"There appear to be no real barriers that prevent the spread of the fungus throughout Europe."READ MORE-http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-29831384
