Dementiaville, episode 1, review: 'putting the focus back on patients'

So much of the current debate around dementia focuses on carers and the financial time bomb facing the NHS, that it can seem as if we lose sight of those actually suffering it. So it was good to see the start of Channel 4’s new three-part series Dementiaville put the focus back on patients, exploring both how they are affected and new treatment methods that ameliorate the sense of anxiety that can accompany the condition.
Last night’s opener followed the work of specialist carers at Poppy Lodge near Leamington Spa, one of a handful of residential care homes in the UK that use a treatment known as the “butterfly household model”. This is a method that acknowledges rather than seeks to correct the fact that many dementia sufferers, faced with crumbling short-term memory, increasingly retreat into unique worlds of their own by returning to significant events in the past as if they were present reality.
There was no attempt to make 91-year-old Les Hadley – who spent part of every day searching the home for his “dear old dad” – understand that his father died 40 years ago. Instead carers engaged with Les’s memories, never-READ MORE-http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/tv-and-radio-reviews/11652158/Dementiaville-episode-1-review.html

SUPER SICK RECORDS

It’s like the longest, most drawn-out year-long origin story, but it works. Two guys who decide that they want to put out their band’s next release on their own label and hey, while they’re making a label, they may as well try something new and different with it. The thought that if they started a label where making money from artists wasn’t the biggest thing in the world; the curiosity to see what would happen if they decided to work with musicians to make cool music just because, without one eye on cash all the time. The ball-busting commitment to releasing new music on time every single month; the pressure and arguments that go along with making that happen and the joint celebrations and immeasurable pride that go with making that happen.READ MORE-http://www.supersickrecords.com/

RSPB launches hotline to locate the UK's rarest breeding birds of prey

The RSPB is encouraging farmers, birdwatchers and walkers to keep a look out for Montagu's harriers, the UK's rarest breeding bird of prey, after recently discovering the bird's African wintering grounds for the first time.

In 2014, only eight pairs of Montagu's harrier are known to have nested in the UK and it is essential that the small number of breeding attempts made this year are identified and protected from accidental damage, disturbance or persecution to give these magnificent birds the best possible chance.

From the migration data provided by 'Mark', an adult male Montagu's harrier that was tagged last summer in South-West England, the RSPB was able to locate the winter grounds of UK birds in Senegal for the first time.

Mark Thomas, who leads on Montagu's harrier conservation work for the RSPB, said: "For the first time we know exactly where these rare birds of prey go once they leave the UK. The data provided by our tagged harrier, 'Mark', will help us pinpoint our conservation efforts to boost the numbers of UK Montagu's harrier.

"Now that these birds of prey have survived the journey back to the UK, it is vitally important that we can identify as many nesting spots as possible."
The core population of Montagu's harrier usually returns to the same nesting areas each year, with 'Mark' returning to the exact same field. The RSPB has been working successfully with these landowners for more than 30 years; however, it is very important that any new or unknown nests are located.
Montagu's harrier arrive in the UK around May time to nest, before returning to Africa in August. It is possible to spot the breathtaking birds of prey on passage, particularly on the south coast of England.

Mr Thomas added: "The UK population is currently teetering on the brink and we are determined to find out why. Last year, reports to the hotline helped us confirm their presence at some of the traditional nesting sites but we are desperate to locate any new sites and be positioned to help more youngsters successfully fledge.
"Farmers and birdwatchers can really help with the conservation of this threatened species. Now is the best time to witness the adults' airborne courtship before they establish their crop nests and become difficult to spot. If you are fortunate enough to see these breathtaking birds then please contact the hotline to let us know."
Building on last year's work, the RSPB in partnership with the Dutch Montagu's Harrier Foundation and the Sound Approach [note 2] will be satellite tagging additional birds this year. The tiny satellite trackers, fitted to the harriers' backs, provide real time data, revealing migration routes and their wintering grounds in Africa.

Montagu's harriers are striking birds - they are larger than a kestrel with long wings and a long tail giving them a slender appearance. The males are plain grey, with black wingtips and a white underside. The females are mottled brown with a white rump.

They breed in the south-west of England on lowland farmland, particularly winter cereals, oilseed rape and field silage.

Any possible sightings of Montagu's harrier can be reported to the hotline on 01767 693398 or emailed to wildlife@rspb.org.uk. Details should include the date, six digit grid reference if possible and a contact telephone number. All reports to the hotline will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

Herpes treatment for skin cancer

Herpes simplex
The herpes virus could help to treat the advanced stages of the most serious form of skin cancer, researchers have discovered. Herpes simplex is the virus that causes cold sores. Previous laboratory research has shown that a mutant form of the virus has improved the survival times of animals with malignant melanoma tumours. The virus is also known to reproduce itself more rapidly in human cancer cells, rather than in healthy cells, leading to their death. A team from the University of Glasgow carried out a preliminary study to discover whether a safe, genetically modified version of the virus could be safely used on patients. I would hope that herpes simplex might be included in non-surgical therapy for this disease in the future Professor Rona MacKie, Glasgow University Five patients with advanced skin cancer that has spread to-READ MORE -http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1171667.stm-HPOEFULLY THIS ARTICLE IS TRUE EN D WILL HELP END CANCER

To do what little we can to cherish all beings, without exception, traveling through life weve alwyas the wellbeing of others in mind.

HISTORY

Gesar Karate logo, depicting the Namibian fish eagle, was designed by Sensei Dentlinger's Holsworthy students in England. The logo represents the skill, power, grace and beauty of movement that sensei Dentlinger wishes to transmit to his students.

It was in June 2010 that Sensei Dentlinger first met Kelsang Pawo, founder of the Gesar Foundation for children. It was at this meeting the two men agreed that the headquarters of Gesar Karate should be at the hub of Gesar world activities in Devon England.

The true history began many moons ago in Namibia. Above is merely the current story of which is being currenty build upon. May countless beings benefit from our growth.

Gesar karate evolved from Karate-Zen Namibia and Karate-zen Intenational. Our Chief instructor, Sensei Hjalmar Dentlinger, continous to train under the highly experienced namibian based instructor Shihan Husselmann.

Sensei Dentlinger from the age of 14 has dedicated himself to the traditional art of Goju-riyu karate. He is also active in sports karate and has achieved the rank of Sandan( 3rd dan), he has over ten years martial arts experience and has competed at national level (both in Namibia and England) and Africa level of competition.

Hjalmar Willi Dentlinger- born 29/12/1985 in Windhoek, Namibia.
Sensei Dentlinger started karate in 2000 under Shihan Husselmann (5th Dan) in Namibia. He trained the style of Goju-Riyu Karate. Was graded shodan by Shihan Husselmann and then Nidan by the English Karate Organisation in 2009 and Sandan in 2012 by the English Karate Organisation.

He has competed at national level in Namibia and in the UFAK Africa Games. He has also come third at the E.K.O. national championships in 2009.

His aims and goals are quite simple to make karate and all martial arts available to all by making it free to all people, at the moment there is a low fee to pay, but Sensei Dentlinger is working on bringing that down.

Competition karate is his favourite part of karate, even though he does not let the traditional side of karate down.-http://www.gesarkarate.moonfruit.com/#-https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gesar-Karate/150357168378775
