Mid Ulster identified as 'giant hotspot' by scientists

An area in Northern Ireland has been identified as a "giant hotspot" by scientists studying a gene defect which causes people to grow abnormally tall.
One in 150 people in Mid-Ulster were found to carry the gene, compared to one in 1,000 in Belfast and one in 2,000 in the rest of the UK.
More than three-quarters of carriers will never develop health issues, but it can cause long-term problems and be potentially life-threatening for those that do.
Scientists hope the work will help find those at risk of passing on the gene.
The gene - called AIP, but known as the "giant gene" - can result in too much growth hormone, which is produced and released by the pituitary gland, a pea-sized gland just below the brain.
The excessive production occurs as the result of a non-cancerous tumour in the gland.-read more and see video

MICE WHISTLE LIKE A JET ENGINE TO ATTRACT A MATE

Mice make whistling noises to seek sex by using a mechanism similar to that of a jet engine inside their throats, research has found.
It was previously thought that these ‘Clangers’-style songs were either the result of a mechanism similar to that of a tea kettle, or of the resonance caused by the vibration of the vocal cords.
But a study co-authored at the University of Cambridge and published in the journal Current Biology has found that when mice ‘sing’, they use a mechanism similar to that seen in the engines of supersonic jets.
The high frequency whistles are used by mice to attract mates and for territorial defence.
“Mice make ultrasound in a way never found before in any animal,” said the study’s lead author Elena Mahrt, from Washington State University.
The researchers found that mice do not use vibrating vocal folds in their larynx to make their ultrasonic sounds.
Instead, they point a small air jet coming from the windpipe against the inner wall of the larynx, causing a resonance and producing an ultrasonic whistle.
Using ultra-high-speed video of 100,000 frames per second the researchers showed that the vocal folds remain completely still while ultrasound was coming from the mouse’s larynx.
“This mechanism is known only to produce sound in supersonic flow applications, such as -read more

Osprey nesting tower erected in Yelland

Untitled design (16)AN OSPREY nesting platform is to be put up overlooking the Yelland estuary so the rare birds can be spotted during their bi-annual migrations.
There are only thought to be around 200 breeding pairs in the UK and it is hoped that the new nesting platform will give people in North Devon the chance to observe them during their trips between the North of the UK and West Africa.

EVERYTHING IS AWKWARD by Mike Bender, Doug Chernack

EVERYTHING IS AWKWARD by Mike BenderThe team behind Awkward Family Photos (2010) unveils a playfully cringeworthy collection of kid-centered photos submitted to their website, celebrating the idea that “everything and everyone is awkward.”
The opening text orients readers to the creators’ construction of the word awkward: “It’s kind of a silly word. But all it really means is that everything isn’t always perfect.” Ensuing double-page spreads juxtapose sedate, run-of-the-mill photos on the verso with, well, awkward corresponding images on the recto. Readers may laugh at the candid shots (or may worry a bit), many of which could be stills from an America’s Funniest Home Videos episode. Take, for example, pages that show how even sleeping can be awkward: an Asian child sleeps serenely on a bed made up with flowered sheets on the verso, while a white child with blond ringlets sits in a decidedly awkward pose on the floor, leaning face-first against table legs on the recto. As for "everyone"? A verso image of an interracial Asian and white couple with their biracial kids is a sweet family portrait; meanwhile, on the recto, a photo of a black family shows “AWKWARD” parents smooching their adorable—and thoroughly aghast—baby on either cheek. The closing text assures readers that life is made interesting by its awkward moments as it encourages individuality and playfulness.

Canine tooth found near Stonehenge 'on Britain's earliest journey' shows dogs were prehistoric man's best friend

canine, stonehenge, britain, earliest, journey, prehistoric, friendA tooth dug up near Stonehenge shows dogs were man’s best friend way back in prehistoric times, experts claimed.
Archaeologists say they have unearthed evidence that shows an Alsatian joined what is believed to be the earliest journey in British history on a 250-mile trip from York to Stonehenge in Wiltshire.
The domesticated dog tooth was discovered at Blick Mead, about a mile from the World Heritage Site, with scientific tests showing the canine most likely came from York.
David Jacques, a senior research fellow at the University of Buckingham, said the dig was a significant find as experts were unaware people travelled such long distances 7,000 years ago.read more

SCHIAPARELLI: THE EXOMARS ENTRY, DESCENT AND LANDING DEMONSTRATOR MODULE

One of the core scientific goals of any mission to Mars is the search for evidence of life. The best approach is to investigate the surface where the evidence may lie.
The key element for accessing the surface of Mars and one of the greatest challenges in space exploration is the successful execution of the entry, descent and landing sequence.
This is one of the reasons why since the late 1960s there have been so many missions attempting to landon the surface of Mars, some being successful, many others ill-fated.
Schiaparelli - an entry, descent and landing demonstrator module - is a technology demonstration vehicle carried by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). Schiaparelli and TGO were launched on 14 March 2016 on a Proton rocket from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.  Schiaparelli will demonstrate the capability of ESA and European industry to perform a controlled landing on the surface of Mars. The preparation for this mission enhances Europe’s expertise and enables the testing of key technologies which could be used in subsequent missions to Mars.read more

Can Dogs Have Attention Deficit Disorder?

Can Dogs Have Attention Deficit Disorder? There’s a huge amount of controversy when it comes to hyperactivity (ADHD) in human children. There’s no doubt that lots of children genuinely suffer from ADHD, but some professionals believe that too many are diagnosed with the problem just because they are overly energetic. This can lead to unwarranted treatment. Similarly, there are some dogs which seem to have endless energy – they whine a lot, can’t seem to relax and can often be destructive. Is it possible that dogs can suffer from ADHD too? And if so, how common is the condition?
ADHD is in fact extremely rare in dogs. In most cases, a dog that appears to be hyperactive is actually bored, attention seeking or anxious. Many first (or even second) time owners don’t realize that dogs are clever animals that need something to do with their brain, and a way to use up their often boundless energy. If they don’t get that physical and mental stimulation, they aren’t likely to feel settled or relaxed.
This is particularly the case if your dog is of a working or herding breed. Dogs that were read more
